Sometimes the best way to stop pain and protect your health is to remove a tooth that’s beyond saving. If you’ve just had an emergency extraction — or you’re facing one — the good news is that recovery is usually smooth when you know what to do. The first 24 to 48 hours matter most, so here’s your straightforward aftercare guide.
The First 24 Hours
- Bite gently on the gauze we provide for 30–45 minutes to help a blood clot form. Replace it if needed.
- Rest and keep your head elevated. Skip strenuous activity for the day.
- Don’t rinse, spit, or use a straw. The suction can dislodge the clot that’s protecting the socket.
- Avoid smoking, which significantly raises your risk of complications.
- Manage discomfort with any medication we recommend and a cold compress on the cheek.
Protecting Against Dry Socket
Dry socket happens when the protective blood clot is lost too early, exposing the bone underneath. It’s uncomfortable but preventable. The biggest culprits are smoking, drinking through a straw, and vigorous rinsing in the first few days. Signs to watch for include a throbbing ache that starts a few days after the extraction, a bad taste, or an empty-looking socket. If that happens, call us — it’s easily treated.
Eating and Drinking While You Heal
Stick to soft, cool foods for the first day or two — think yogurt, smoothies (spooned, not sipped through a straw), mashed potatoes, and soup that isn’t too hot. Gradually return to normal foods as comfort allows, chewing on the opposite side.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to heal after an extraction? The socket’s surface usually heals within a couple of weeks, though full bone healing takes longer. Most people feel back to normal within a few days.
When should I call the dentist after an extraction? Call if you have severe or worsening pain after day three, heavy bleeding, swelling that increases, fever, or signs of dry socket.
When can I brush near the extraction site? Keep brushing your other teeth right away, but be gentle around the socket for the first few days, then gradually resume normal cleaning.
