Kids are wonderfully fearless, which also means scraped knees, playground tumbles, and the occasional dental mishap. When your child comes to you holding their mouth and crying, it’s hard to think clearly. So here’s a calm, parent-friendly guide to the most common childhood dental emergencies and exactly what to do in the moment.
Knocked-Out Baby Tooth
Unlike adult teeth, a knocked-out baby tooth should not be reinserted, doing so can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. Instead, keep your child calm, control any bleeding with gentle pressure from clean gauze, and call us for guidance.
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth
If it’s a permanent tooth, time matters enormously. Pick it up by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently if dirty, and if possible slip it back into the socket. If not, keep it in milk and call us immediately on your way in.
Chipped or Broken Tooth
Rinse your child’s mouth with warm water, apply a cold compress to reduce swelling, and save any broken pieces. Even small chips are worth having checked, since damage can extend below the surface.
Toothache
Rinse with warm water and gently floss around the sore tooth to dislodge any trapped food. Never place aspirin directly on the gum. If pain persists or there’s swelling, it’s time to call.
Bitten Lip, Tongue, or Cheek
Clean the area gently, apply a cold compress, and use light pressure to control bleeding. If bleeding is heavy or doesn’t stop, seek care right away.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I put a knocked-out baby tooth back in? No. Reinserting a baby tooth can harm the permanent tooth developing beneath it. Call your dentist for guidance instead.
How do I know if my child’s toothache is serious? Persistent pain, swelling, fever, or a tooth that’s sensitive to pressure all warrant a prompt call to the dentist.
Can you see children for dental emergencies? Yes, call us and we’ll advise on the best next step and get your child seen as quickly as possible.
